Why Generation Y is a restless group, Ready for Free Enterprise

Why Generation Y is a restless group, Ready for Free Enterprise

I read an article a few years back on Generation Y and why they make great entrepreneurs. SO Generation Y falls in the age group of 18-26, they are young and restless these days. Why is that, because they have higher expectations then their older co-workers and on the first day in a new job they are already looking for a better job, they are using each job to get experience.

“Generation Yers did not seem satisfied by the things that make their older co workers happy” said a report in canada in its reports on the generation gap. 36% on gen Yers wanted to be working at the same job in 2 years. Most expected their current job to be a temporary stop on the career path. That is in direct contrast in the workers 26 and older who planned on staying put in the job they are in.

There are some other differences as well, two thirds of gen X get satisfaction from their work and more then three quarters take pride in the type of work they do in contrast 4 in 10 gen Yers felt satisfaction and only a little over half are proud in the work they do. SO it is no surprising that Gen Y is the group looking for greener pastures.

The article also said that Gen Yers are also the most educated, they may not have the practical experience, but the do know how to learn. They are also not satisfied with menial, tedious jobs.

The best way for employers to deal with the Gen Yers is as a role model, to challenge them, to let them be social, to train them, to give them respect and let them grow in their jobs.

What the Gen Yers hate are supervisors who can not control their tempers, inflexible work schedules, a restrictive, isolated workplace that is not fun, and jobs that they feel are trivial or beneath them.

Companies and managers who ignore this risk losing these bright young Gen Yers to companies who do understand them.

So how as Entrepreneurs do we attract these ready to learn, people who want more out of life. We mentor them, challenge them, teach them that they can control their destiny. We show them there is a way that might not be their parents or co workers way of life. I have seen many Gen Yers come into free enterprise and have very successful careers, they are always learning something new, and making money and that excites them, they are able to travel, have fun and live their lives by their design, not by default.
